The current breeding programme at the Mooimelk Cow Hotel is based on the use of test semen from the Taurus young sire test programme in Irene, Pretoria. The genetic merit of a test bull is high as mature bulls and represent the latest genetics available in the world. As a group the test bull’s progeny will compare very well with older proven sire’s progeny. Test bull’s progeny will always perform better than natural service bull’s progeny because affordable natural service bulls would be bred from the top 5% - 15% best cows. The prices paid for test bulls, (R30 000 each) entering the Taurus young sire test programme are about double the price of bulls sold to commercial dairy farmers @ R15 000 per bull. For that reason test bulls are selected from the top 5% of cows based on performance testing.
